Go in depth into the Alt Empordà history as a border territory in the Exile Memorial Museum

During the last months of the Spanish Civil War, it is calculated that around 350.000 people escaped to France across the border through Le Perthus, Portbou and other points in Alt Empordà.  Several towns and landscapes of the region acquired a great importance at the moment of the big Republican exodus.

The exile is a phenomenon of the universal scope that has affected and continues affecting a great number of men, women and children of all over the world. The Exile Memorial Museum – MUME promotes the recovery of the history and  the memory of the exiles from our country, especially of the republican exile, generated by the outcome of the Civil War, between the years 1936-1939. The MUME wants to be a space for the memorial and for historical reflection where the example and the memories of so many personal livings, collective and political, serve as a witness of learning for future generations.

We recommend you to make a visit into the Museum, located in the Jonquera’s Old Town, as well as taking a look over his temporary exhibitions (check the schedule). Once per month, in concrete the last Sunday, the museum offers its Open Day (from 10am to 2pm) and also a visit guided for free at 11am (it is necessary to confirm the assistance in advance on the telephone 972 55 65 33).
