La Farinera, located in Castelló d’Empúries is a factory, which dates back from the end of 19th Century to first half of 20th Century, and it was built on one of the three medieval flour mills. In 1998, it was opened to the public, recovered by the town and reconverted into an ecomuseum which discloses the evolution of the flower industry throughout the second half of 19th Century. The institution is nowadays a section of the Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia.
The visit offers a route through the factory rooms, along a trip from one floor to another, following the complex process of the wheat. The visitor travels throughout history and science in order to know a bit more about the wheat, flour and the bread’s world.
It is also suggested the visit to the room EmpordàNA’T, a taste of the four big natural reserves in Empordà, a stroll through its natural, cultural and immaterial heritage.
The Ecomuseum La Farinera has got the badge of guarantee in terms of environmental quality in the category of cultural equipments. This feature has as main goal to promote and recognize the ecoefficiency and sustainability according to planification, future projection and management of the institution.
