The Palafrugell Cork Museum is a cultural institution whose mission is to acquire, preserve, interpret and value the heritage structured around the world of cork in Catalonia. The Cork Museum is located in the old cork factory of Modernist style Miquel Vincke & Meyer, the most important of the industrial sector in Spain. In 2012 the new headquarters were opened, within an space of more than 3.000 m2 and taking part of the biggest cork industrial park restored in Europe. The center is a section of the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya.
The permanent exhibition, translated to four languages, offers a distilled tasting from the cork oak forests, from craft production to industrial input, about caps and ecological culture, and about the history of one of the most important factories which dates from the first half of the 20th Century in Spain.
The tour goes throughout this old cork oak factory. The starting point begins with the display of the documentary Can Mario, an outstanding story, it continues through the central garden where we can find the cork oak forest and from where we can get to understand the characteristics of the cork oak and the Mediterranean forest. The next space allows us to discover the difficult task of gathering the raw material to the cork cap, both when in the artisanal moment and in the machining. Finally, the interactive space allows us to experiment, to manipulate and to observe the incredible properties of this unique and surprising material.
